The Golden Temple of Amritsar is also known as Harmandir Sahib is located in Punjab, India. It is also known as Gurudwara Sahib and is the most important pilgrimage for Sikhs.

The Golden Temple of Amritsar is so-called because of the gold plating on the main temple. It was built around a man-made pool and was completed by Shri Guru Ram Das in 1577. After being built, rebuilt and invaded finally the present temple was completed in 1776.

How to reach Amritsar?

By air:
Amritsar has its own airport, just 11km away from the city centre. 

By trains:
Amritsar is well connected by train from all over India. A train journey from Delhi takes about 6 hours.

By road:
Amritsar is very well connected by bus from Delhi, Chandigarh, Jammu etc. The roads are good so you can have a comfortable journey.
Amritsar is divided into old parts and new parts. The Golden Temple is located in the old part and is just 15 mins away from the railway station.

November to March is the best time to visit Amritsar as the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing. The weather in winters can be a bit harsh so pack heavy woollens and warmers.

1. Make sure to remove your shoes before entering the temple.
2. Wash your legs at the pond in front of the temple.
3. Always cover your head with scarves for girls and turban or handkerchiefs for girls.

5. Stand in the line with patience.
6. Don’t consume alcohol or drugs.
7. Toilets are available at the back of the temple, near the information centre.

About the food at Langar
You can get mouth-watering food, free of cost at the langar. They serve food 24 hours a day and you can also volunteer to work at Golden Temple serving food, tray, cup and water.

Although there is no paying option still you can donate, these donations actually are used to buy the food. On an average 1,00,000 people are served meals every day. The food consists of dal, chapatti, yoghurt and chai, simple but very soothing. Mealtimes are from 12 pm to 2 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm.

About the waiting time for getting into the temple
To get inside the temple, you don’t have to stand in any queue, you just have to submit your shoes at the shoe keepers place. It is free of cost. But to get inside the main temple you have to stand in a long queue, so it’s better to go early in the morning.

About the people who can enter the temple. People of all caste, creed, sex and religion are allowed into the temple. The temple has gates in all directions, showing the openness of Sikhs to people all over the world.
